Fundación Iván Tovar presents “Iván Tovar: Le Retour”, an exhibition dedicated to the work of the Dominican artist Iván Tovar. Located at the historic Ex Istituto Idrografico of the Museo Storico Navale, the exhibition positions Tovar’s transatlantic trajectory—encompassing his formative years in the Dominican Republic, two decades in Paris, and his eventual return home—as a central component of the global history of Surrealism. Curated by Christian Viveros-Fauné, the project aligns with recent global reappraisals of the Surrealist movement following the centenary of André Breton’s manifesto.

The selection of paintings and sculptures highlights Tovar’s ability to synthesise Caribbean motifs and Dominican hues with mid-twentieth-century European artistic styles. Described as “machines for longing”, his artworks explore global symbols and visual phenomena to promote cultural positions that have historically been marginalised. By interweaving alternative histories and underacknowledged narratives, the exhibition resonates with the 61st International Art Exhibition’s theme, “In Minor Keys”. The presentation serves as both a global introduction to Tovar’s oeuvre and an exploration of the internationalist possibilities of Surrealism, proposing new ways of seeing that transcend traditional regional boundaries.
